Inhaling baby powder may cause health complications for children

I read that babies die if they inhale baby powder. Is it really dangerous? Sweet-smelling baby powder doesn’t pose any dangers if used properly. But parents should avoid shaking it around a baby’s face or in the air because some research suggests it might cause problems if inhaled into the lungs.

“A baby would not die just from inhaled baby powder. If there are problems, it’s because of some kind of complication, including pneumonia or something like that,” says Linda Payne, a certified pediatric nurse practitioner with the Austin Diagnostic Clinic.

“Most doctors are not saying that you absolutely should not use it, but that if you do use it, use it with a lot of discretion,” says Payne, a registered nurse.

That means you should put a little on your hands and apply it to the baby’s bottom without shaking the powder around in the air. And Payne says some experts prefer powder with corn starch over that with talc because the corn starch is considered less dangerous and more beneficial.

While baby powder is one of those things that’s long been considered standard nursery gear, most babies do just fine – and smell pretty sweet – without it. “It’s probably a holdover from years past,” Payne says of baby powder’s lingering popularity. “A lot of people think it makes the diaper more comfortable for the child.”

And in some cases, particularly in the summer when it helps keep bottoms dry, baby powder can be useful in combatting diaper rash.

“But a lot of people use it just because of the smell. And parents could use a little baby lotion instead and the baby would smell just as good and you wouldn’t have to worry about inhalation,” Payne says.
