Woman’s health important item during menopause

Women approaching menopause shouldn’t automatically assume they should take synthetic hormones to ease symptoms. That’s the assertion of a California couple who’ll be the featured speakers at Thursday’s Menopause Pathways program. Dr. Joseph and Mary Ann Mayo, argue that overall health is more important than symptomatic relief during menopause. The Mayos will be speaking during the Menopause Pathways health education program in the Walb Union Ballroom at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. The program begins at 5 p.m. with health education and free health screenings. The Mayos will speak from 7 to 9 p.m.

People use certain items because their doctors or their best friends tell them to, Mary Ann Mayo said. “They need to ask ‘are there ways I can ease into perimenopausal times . . . and not immediately go on hormones?’ “

She said the five years or so before menopause, known as perimenopause, can actually be worse than menopause itself.

“It’s such a time of upheaval,” she said. “We’re trying to help people in that stage.”

The Mayos have written a book called “The Menopause Manager,” which describes the health issues surrounding menopause, the cessation of ovulation and menstruation every woman undergoes, generally in her late 40s or early 50s.

“We’re real advocates of women getting a baseline health assessment, … then making lifestyle interventions,” that can make the transition easier, Mary Ann Mayo said.

“Things like walking three days a week for a half hour or 45 minutes is good,” she said. “Not only does it help with heart disease, it helps for memory, it keeps the joints loose.”

More and more menopausal women are being prescribed estrogen supplements, ostensibly to ward off heart disease and osteoporosis, she said. But estrogen has its own health risks, including breast cancer.

“Anything that’s put in your mouth should be there for a good reason,” she said. “What has happened too often is they’ve simply been told to take something and they’re never told why and they’re never sure why they’re taking it.”

There are other, less potentially dangerous, ways to prevent or lessen menopause-related health issues, she said.

For example, she said women who are prescribed estrogen to prevent osteoporosis should first establish a regular regimen of weightbearing exercise, such as weightlifting and walking. They should also take regular calcium supplements, along with a good multivitamin that includes a high vitamin B content.

She said there are women who can be helped by hormone-replacement therapy. She urged women to educate themselves about their options, and not to be afraid to question their doctors about what treatments may be best.

“There’s nothing wrong with a woman deciding that she wants to take (hormones) and she’s comfortable on it, . . . as long as she knows her breast cancer risks and her heart (disease) risks,” she said. “We like to see doctors who will work with people on whatever plan that they both feel is helpful and healthy.”
