Vasectomy makes males infertile, not impotent

Now that my wife and I have four children, we don’t want any more. I would like to have a vasectomy performed, because my wife’s religious beliefs do not permit her to have her tubes tied, or whatever they do. I do respect her beliefs. I’m hearing, though, that vasectomy can make you impotent. My father is an example. He says it did it to him. He had his performed 10 years ago, and is now impotent. Do you think the vasectomy did it?

I don’t want to contradict your father, J. He knows better than anyone what happened to him. But I think he should look into other causes for his problem.

Many times, myths grow up around certain medical or surgical procedures. I have, in fact, heard the one about the supposed link between vasectomy and impotency, but I know of no one to whom this has happened. Nor can I find any citations in medical literature of it happening, despite the fact that many millions of men have had the procedure. It does not involve interference with nerves or blood vessels.

Sometimes I detect confusion over terminology, some people equating infertility and impotency. Infertility is the goal of vasectomy, the cutting of the sperm tubes. Impotency is the inability to achieve an erection. If vasectomy is the answer to your family-planning goal, then you can go ahead and have it without fear of it physically interfering with your sexual performance. Weight-gain mysteries.
